rhubarb going to seed
« on: April 17, 2014, 19:27 »
My timperly early is going great guns. Have had so much from it already that I've started on the vodka + ginger + rhubarb recipe that a friend on the plot passed on to me - only so much crumble that I can cope with. However, I grew some Victoria from seed (just to see if I could) and 66% of the plants (2) have decided to go to seed this year (their second).
So, I've removed seed heads from one but left it on the other - as I'm told they can go mighty high and look quite impressive. Anyhow, friend on the plot has had one of his plants go to seed 2 years running so is composting it.
My question is this (finally) - if your rhubarb plant goes to seed (repeatedly) is it worth keeping or should you just give up on it?

Cheers,
Balders

This has happened to my plants the last few years. I do remove the flower stems when possible and the plant is OK. Make sure you feed it well, and I see no reason to hoik it out.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I thought that rhubarb always goes to seed every year if it is warm.  ??? I just snap the flower heads off as soon as I see them.

I had  a similar thing.  A newly planted crown threw up seed heads for the first three years.  This year it has not done so and for the first time looks like a reasonable crop.  Up the lotty I have a really mature big rhubarb that seems only occasionally to put up a seed head.  So i'd persevere and just take the heads of if and when they appear

I inherited a few healthy older plants and each year have produced seed heads.  I've just removed the heads and had good crops of Rhubarb each time.

It's something to do with temperature I'm told. If you've had a warm spring, yep the plant will flower. Nothing to worry about - as others said, just dead head the plants.
