Asparagus
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:58 »
Hi

Just been reading that asparagus should be ready to pick now... is anyone's asparagus ready? - there's not even a sign from my asparagus bed.  It's the first year I can cut them so I may be a bit overexcited...

Sue.

I'm in the North-West too and no sign of mine either.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Even no sign of asparagus in the South. Beginning of April is a bit early for asparagus, normally they start to emerge from mid-April onwards.

Ta - I can now relax for a while and resume hovering over the asparagus bed with a knife in a couple of weeks time.

Don't give up your patrol completely. Slugs just love to nibble the emerging young shoots.

Asparagus come up only when they're good and ready. They don't believe in calendars   :D

I've seen mine start to peek out as late as beginning of June. The temps were obviously not to their liking.

Thanks for the warning. I'll start the slug patrol. My first proper year cutting too I think. I put 2 year old crowns in in 2011, left them in 2012' cut a few 2013 - couldn't resist 1 per crown, so I think I can pick several this year can't i?

I heard on the TV that this year's are already in production but can't remember what it was on and if they had any sort of protection - my guess is that they have.

Couple of spears showing here this morning, most already nibbled by slugs. I put some pellets down last weekend and its slugmageddon out there.

Mine are just showing.  It's only their second year so i'll not be harvesting any.  But nevertheless they are starting to come through so more relieved than anything
