Decomposing Crow
« on: April 10, 2014, 22:39 »
No idea how it got there but whilst preparing a raised bed this evening I found a dead crow completely buried under the compost? It doesn't seem to have been there very long and was reasonably intact but I intend growing vegetables in this bed, sowing in the next few days.

Is this ok for me still to do this?

Unless it hid under the compost to die someone must have put it there!

Anyway, it will all add to the nutrient value of your soil unless you feel that it deserves a proper burial. Personally I'd bung it on the compost heap.

You could wear gloves when sowing if you are worried about any infection.

Nooo.. Don't put it on the compost... no meat or cooked food etc. should go in to composting. Same goes for pet poo - dog or cat..

Must admit, I'd get the spade and dig the crow out and bin it. Who knows what parasites/diseases it had that could survive in compost and spread. Always better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the replies, the crow has been disposed of as soon as I found it but my main concern was whether any disease may exist at the moment preventing me from sowing?

The soil will be fine, any nasties will be long gone by the time the crops are ready. Sunlight is a very effective disinfectant. Wash your hands after handling the soil obviously.

Foxes will bury food when they have a glut to come back to when they are hungry so that's probably how it got there.

Debz is quite right it Could be a fox stashing food  >:( I had this a couple of months back,  I called in to the plot on the way back from work, to be greeted by a rabbits foot sticking out of the ground of what was to become my spud bed   So as it was getting dark I would call back in the morning,  dig it up bag and bin it!  When I returned said rabbit had gone  ???
Optimism probably a gardeners best tool.

Thanks Debz and Lottiman, think that's exactly what it's been as we do have a fox which roams about the area.

If you have a sealed composter you can safely put cooked food and animal waste into it. Been doing it for donkey's years with no ill effects.

Yes, eggs have been mentioned on here before.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
