How do I track down a Victorian Grow Saffron book?
« on: November 11, 2014, 22:04 »
One of our esteemed saffron crocus growers, David Smale, says he referred to (an unnamed) Victorian book on growing saffron.

I asked at the library and they had no idea how to tace such a book. Would anyone here have a clue on tracking this tome down as I really, really, want to read it.

Very many thanks

If there is any way of getting the title/author you can try the British Library. Am not sure at what age/decreptitude of book they start limiting access, but that would be the place I would start with any fragments of detail.

Edit: I meant title, not name! Long day!

try abebooks.com or bookfinder.com. Both sites will allow you to search millions of books for sale using keywords like 'growing saffron'. As surbie says, an author's name would greatly simplify the search.

Thank you, both. The title was not given, sadly.

I will renew my efforts tomorrow, with your tips.

Thanks again

Google Books? (The SEARCH TOOLS let you constrain a search to a specific century) ... but I didn't see anything obvious.  There's a book several hundred pages long published in 2005 though!

In this article Mr Smale says he read a tudor manuscript from the archives of the library at Saffron Walden

So perhaps you could ask them what books they have?

Emails sent off! (Waiting now for replies, fingers crossed.)

Lots of reading to do from the tips and links given! (In the company of a young cat who has adopted us - walking across my laptop as I write...)

Very, very many thanks to everyone who has helped.
