Newbie in Essex with a question already (sorry!)
« on: February 20, 2013, 16:43 »
Hi there, I'm a complete newbie to allotments (except we had a family one when I was a kiddie). We've had a brand new plot of allotments come up in our area and I was really keen to take one on for my family but bit unsure of the costs. The rent per plot is £250 per year (comes with shed, water but and compost bin) but I've been checking out other areas, and this seems a bit high. Can anyone give me an idea of current rent rates? I know it will vary depending on where you are but just to give me some sort of figure please? Thanks!!!  :)

Hi and welcome. :) I'll move your question into the grow your own board for more people to see and answer.

Welcome to the Forum :)

That seems a high rent - what size is it for that, and whereabouts are you?

If you click your user name you can add a location, so we won't have to ask again ;)

There's a thread running at the moment about rents - you can find it here

We have a full plot with water and pay £36 per year, your rent seems way too high, who owns the land?

That does sound very high.

Ours are £63 per year for a full plot. Water is available for most of the year, we get the occasional delivery of chipped up trees, leaves in the autumn from street sweeping and that is pretty much it. Oh, they set rat bait out if we let them know we are overrun.

Check out what else you might get beofre turning it down. Do you have toilets for example. a site shop, superb security?

We have none of these.

You might think it is worth it at the weekly amount, but then again....

We helped set up our association and came to the agreement that a pound a week was fair. That includes communal tools, use of bar b q area water and communal polytunnel.

250 quid a year is taking the peas.

Ouch! We pay£24 a year but we only get water and one load of manure per year (if we are lucky). Yes £250 is dear but if you get toilets, deliveries of manure, bark etc and have other facilities I might consider it. Otherwise - no. I am guessing this is privately owned rather than council owned?

We pay £24 for a full plot, basically just a square of ground with water provided, yours does seem high but im quessing your somewhere in essex and things are more expensive down there, that being said it still seems high and would agree that this is a private site but im also guessing that you dont get many council run plots available, sorry not been more helpful hope you stick with it.

My yearly charge is £30. £240 does seem high. Is it private land? I know some garden centers charge £25 a month for a allotment plot on there land.

I'm across the water from you in SE18 / Welling border and I pay £40 for a half plot - water, manure + chips included (when available). It's a Bexley council site but independently managed.   Is yours is a private allotment?

I pay £12 per annum including water, I would not be prepared to pay £240 as you would need to grow a lot of produce to make it cost effective.  OK if you just want the comaradery and excercise though, it's cheaper than a gym  :)

I would agree that this is high but with new shed, water butt and compost bin there is obviously an investment undertaken here (are they private?). I wouldn't think it hugely unreasonable given the strength of the 'market' - how much value would we all actually place on our plots? Mine is worth hundreds of pounds to me in terms of the enjoyment and health I get from it - but don't tell my association or the Council!
