Chicken with swollen feet. Advice needed please.
« on: February 14, 2009, 17:59 »
Hi, ive got a chicken with swollen feet. It started as scaly leg mite. We bathed her with surgical spirit and put vaseline on. Then on advice on here we gave her a drop of Frontline. Im sure thats killed the mites but both feet are swollen,( swollen before we gave her frontine) and crusty looking. Weve brought her in the house now to stop the other girls standing on her feet. She is standing on them both, and managing to jump, eating and drinking fine, but her feet dont look nice. Any advice gratefully recieved.

Hi  Mtoyne

There was thread on this not so long ago, personally I've no experience of Scaley leg but do remember reading that it takes a long time for this to back to normal.

I shall find the link it may help ???

Hi, thanks for that vember. Doesnt look like that pic tho. The top of both feet are swollen. Underside is fine and the toes themselves are fine, its where the toes join the rest of the foot. It definatly started as scaly mite but there arnt any scales visible on swollen bits now. Help. She seems very happy in her self though.

could you possibly post a pic? that might help. Does the area look red, inflammed or just swollen without any extra warmth in the legs? My thoughts are maybe there is an infection brewing underneath.  I would be tempted to take to the vet  to have a look at. She may need an inflammatory injection to reduce inflammation and maybe antibiotics.

Try apply petroleum jelly to her legs and feet.  This smothers any mites left and softens the crusty bits.  You can then try brushing the scales with a soft toothbrush, which removes some of the crust.  Keep applying the petroleum jelly for a while.  It wont be until she fully moults that the scales will be replaced.  Don't try to pick them off or she'll have very sore legs.

Hope this helps
