Potato plants yellow and stems rotting?
« on: June 04, 2011, 22:36 »
:( Just noticed today that two of my potato plants were fully yellow and the lower stems were all squishy. One is Pentland Javelin and the other Celine. Another allotment holder said it could be blight but when I looked this up there were no spots but the leaves were curling. I cut the stems off as close to the ground as I could. Any ideas what the disease is?

It could be blackleg. If it's that, the squishy stem should be black in colour, and you'd need to take out the whole plant rather than just cutting it off at ground level. Here's a link to some info on blackleg - http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=223.

Thanks. I'm on my way to pull the whole plant out. Hope it doesn't infect the remaining plants.

Had the same issue here with Charlotte pots, lost most of a row with the same symptoms, all the others seem to be fine, been keeping a very close eye on them since

The seed spud can do this anyway.

The spuds will be OK to eat.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
