First red tomato?
« on: August 08, 2010, 19:13 »
My husband tells me I have a red tomato, I feel too ill today to even go outside and look. If it is true it is the first red tomato I have managed to grow since 2006!!!!

Sliced home grown tomato, basil on mozerella drizzled with olive oil, black pepper and salt.

Whoo, whoo.

Enjoy which ever way, it will be worth it.

A red tomato? And it not even the middle of August yet?  You're making that up!

I checked formyself today and it is most certainly a red tomato  :D It's a cherry one which is all I grow as they are the only ones that have a chance of ripening outdoors. I have promised my 6 year old son he can eat it tomorrow but there are others that are turning yellowish so they will be ready soon  :D I am so chuffed as the last few summers have been a wash out for toms

Noticed one of mine turning a few days ago, so I threw a few banana skins into the greenhouse - got loads going now!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Banana skins to ripen growing toms rather than picked ones - interesting - does this actually work?

You have to differentiate "growing" from "sitting there on the vine doing nothing".

If the tomato has grown as much as it's going to, but is not ripening, then yes, it does appear to work.

Thank you ethylene!

Used to go out with a lass called Ethylene (old-fashioned, skinny lass if I remember correctly!)

If you want speedy toms, try Red Alert; I picked my first few before the end of June and they have been coming steadily ever since (outdoors!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

try Red Alert

"Shields Up" comes before "Red Alert".

(Sorry, it's a Trekkie thing).

Would that help stop them "warping" or "blowing", Captain?
