:)
I got some potatoes in a shop recently and when boiled they had a lovely yellow flesh which was quite firm but fluffy on the outside and they tasted sweet.  Their skins were yellow but quite thick.
Any ideas what they might be?  I thought Premiere maybe.
I'd appreciate any shared experience of growing potatoes that taste good.

Hello SN, Here's a rundown on the most flavoursome spuds I've grown.

Belle de Fontenay - Yellow salad potato, good yields, great flavour. An old French variety.

Linzer Delikatess - Another lovely salad variety, this time from Austria. Excellent yields, outstanding flavour, waxy texture.Second early.

Kestrel - Brilliant for roasties, an old favourite. Good slug resistance and tastes great.

Charlotte - A more modern salad potato, still has that "home grown" flavour. Big yields.

Yukon Gold - Huge spuds! A fantastic baker. Can crop well, but needs to be well watered in dry spells.

I'm sure that everyone has their faves, but these are the ones I come back to time and time again.

I wonder if your mystery variety could be the new superspud Mayan Gold.
They're supposed to have good drought tolerance and a long growing season(hence their high price) with the flavour improving the longer they are grown. I've included a link so that you can read about them.

I was introduced to Yukon Gold in 98 when I was in Canada, nice spuds.

After boiling, they were soft inside but a bit sticky on the outside.

You might be right.  I bought them in a Norfolk organic farm shop and they were packaged in an unmarked bag.  I have further found out:

Said Greenvale potato company chairman Alan Owens: "No one in Britain will have tasted a potato like this since Queen Elizabeth The First was on the throne.  We’re looking at history on a plate."

Sounds very grand! :)

Thanks for your suggestions, you've no idea how helpful it is for a newbie like me!

Mayan Gold - from the T&M website:

"Yellow skinned, long, oval, tubers with a deeper golden flesh of a unique nutty flavour and an extremely creamy but dry texture. Fantastic for chips and roasting for the crispy texture and fluffy centres. Superb flavour when cooked in its skin for all cooking uses except boiling (as tubers will quickly go mushy), also makes a stunning pie topping. Definitely worth a try."

£5.99 for 20!
This may explain their market for top restaurants and British Royalty.

A bit off topic (sorry) but I was really impressed with the roast spuds we had tonight, fluffy floury and crispy edged - From Morrisons and the make was Sante.
