What to do with my onions that are bolting?
« on: May 30, 2008, 17:28 »
My first bad news of my new hobby    .. Like a few others on this forum my onions have started to bolt. I am unsure what I am meant to be doing with them  :?

Shall I eat them? let them grow and flower? compost them? Remove the stalks?

Is there anything I can do to stop the rest from bolting? So far about 10 of the red ones have bolted.

I have already dug a few up and removed the almost flowering stalks from the rest.

Red's are the worst offenders.

Remove flower. Let them grow, but use them first as they won't store well. You can pull them up & use them like spring onions if you like, but you'll get more off them if you leave them in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Looks like I have done the right thing then. Will be eating a few and leave the rest after removing the flowers.

Thanks :)

From time to time I get a few onions that want to bolt, but mostly from any set bulbs I've put in. They think it's year 2, time to set seed. Rarely get this problem from seeded onions which just keep growing rather than a stop-start cycle.

The onion tops should already be starting to dry before you lift them, so I wouldn't want to eat them..........I'd leave the stalks to dry on the bulbs.
Use some of the smallest bulbs in your salad :)

Also if you start chopping about at drying out onions you'll leave the way open for infections.

The flowers need to be cut off and the sets left to grow. The ones that have flowered need to be used first.
