Grow Your Own / Re: Chitting sweetcorn, when to pot up?

Err.... asking for a friend... but is the chitted bit of the sweetcorn that appears the root or shoot? So which way up would it go in a toilet roll tube?

The root is first to sprout followed a day or two later by the shoot. Root is pointy with hairs coming off it, shoot is blunt and smooth.

Grow Your Own / Re: Onions from seed?

I always grow from seed. It doesn't seem financially logical to grow from sets but so far dire. Hardly any seeds have come up. Growing in trays in greenhouse/conservatory.
Might be the seeds are passed it though. I do have some doing very well which I planted in the autumn. I must admit they are rarely large but on the other hand it's dirt cheap to grow from seed. Specially as I buy from premier seeds! Twice the amount for half the price!

I have plenty of the old ones left. I also use the beer traps the latter is very good but the old slug worked very very well.

Can't say I have problems with sweetcorn in pots. 1 failure out of 35 I assume you haven't got the space as pot grown is very successful.

I eventually lost all my asparagus to mice they didn't eat them they just kept burrowing through the roots. I have traps everywhere for them. I will set up rat traps this year as I lost most of my sweetcorn one year to rats.
Neighbour has dozens of chickens so need to sort myself out in time.
