Strange Egg??
« on: December 18, 2010, 21:47 »
One of my hybrid, ex-battery chickens was poorly about 6 weeks ago but came right after giving her some probiotics. However she has not layed since, except for a couple of (what look like) deformed eggs with a cooked, rubbery texture. She is 2 1/2 years old.
Never seen this before, nor read about it.
She has not got peritinitous, otherwise she would be long dead. Now appears healthy; but not laying.
Has anyone seen this before??

What your hen has probably laid is a lash. I believe it's part of her egg making equipment, so she will now never lay again, ever. She is about the right age for an ex battery hen to do this as they are subjected to prolonged lighting etc to make them lay constantly. I'm afraid you lady now needs to live out her days in comfort with you.

I agree with Orchardlady, this will be a lash, 3 out of my 4 rescues laid lashes within 2 months of me getting them. They are now in retirement  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

She was a prolific layer previously, laying 5-6 eggs a week on a good week. She still sits on the nest making all the right noises, but to no avail.
Time for her to put her feet up.

A couple of months ago I decided an older hen wasn't laying and was very heavy, too many hens, so decided she had to go, preparing her for the pot I found there was an absolute mass inside her, like about 6-7 'scrambled' eggs all pressed together. I thought perhaps she'd been 'blocked up', and I had saved her from a slow death, could this have been the same thing?
