black leaves on broad beans
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:12 »
we have been treating the broad beans for black fly by spraying with soapy water. today I noticed some leaves have black spots, almost looks like they have been splashed with creosote. (SP) is this black fly damage or the soapy water that has caused it, and will it affect the crop, the pods growing all look clear

Are the spots black or brown?  If brown it might be chocolate spot.
Cheese makes everything better.

It does look like chocolate spot.  Wait and see if anyone else has a different opinion.

I would agree, I have that same problem on one or two of my plants.

Yes, its a fungal type ailment (for want of a better word).  I wouldn't worry it doesn't seem to spread feriouscly fast.  I have had one or two plants with it, and it hasn't spread.

If you notice on some of your other leaves in the picture, you will see it as small spots.  Generally gets worse in wet weather, an becomes large blotches ultimately killing the leaves, and/or stems.  A nice hot dry spell will stop it in its tracks (limit damage).
