help with bedtime please
« on: June 14, 2011, 13:32 »
We have recently added 9 point of lay hybrids to our flock of 9 (remaining) ex-bats.  They live within a 100metre electric fenced area and have a choice of 2 houses. The ex-bats have always put themselves to bed quite happily but the new recruits are very reluctant to enter either of our 2 houses without a fight and a couple of them have taken to roosting outside the pen in the trees which we are unhappy about because we have to round them up next day and are also very aware of the local foxes.
Should we consider clipping their wings to stop them flying over the 4 foot fence and does anyone have any other suggestions to overcome the 30 minute round-up vigil every night?

Are your ex batts fighting with the new girls at bed time or is it just between the new girls? Maybe you could cordon off one house with as suggested only a small fenced off area so there is not the stress of choosing where to go to bed. You could also try hanging a torch inside their house as they will be attracted by the light as dusk falls. Yes I do think you should clip their wings, the feathers will grow back with time. Some people may not advocate this course as it also restricts the birds from being able to fly up and out of the way of predators.

Good luck.

We kept them separated for a few days and each flock had their own house and feeders.  we then removed the fence between them and they mix quite happily with just the odd scrap.  In fact they tend to keep themselves in two batches except when we go in the pen.  We had the same problem when they were separated - the new ones just don't seem to understand that the house is for sleeping in.  They seem hell-bent on flying out of the pen to find a roost.  Does anyone think that providing a pole with some arms in the pen might help?

lock them in the house for another 24 hours after wing clip and add an outside pearch for all the hens and try the torch in the coop.

did you see if they have mites in the coop as that could be why they dont want to go to bed.
