helloooooooo there  :D

not too sure about hens, think it depends on the breed etc but i think i read on here that its somewhere between 250 and 300 per year, the chickeny people will tell you much better when someones on.

we have ducks and so far since laying they're averaging 1 each a day, they're khaki campbells and all the advice i've been given and literature i've read seems to average them out at 300 per year, it drops off in the winter for them as it does for hens.

250 as marc says is the average for the year .. but you can get breeds that will lay a lot less or some more so check the specs on the breed

Thanks guys i was thinking if i did go ahead then i would look into resuing battery hens if i do go down this road because of their poor quality of life up to rescue does this lessen their life span and egg laying ect?

Many thanks again Nicky

When we got our 75 ex Batts, we were getting 60 eggs a day, within a year they were down to 4!!

But its a bit of a gamble, as some of the stronger ones can go on for another couple of years laying, some seem to be so stressed and egged out that they give up and just want to enjoy their new life!

Hybrids are bred for egg laying, and our Amberlinks aparently can lay up to 350 eggs a year, but considering some of them aren't laying yet, I'm not sure if they will manage it!

1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

My two hybrids started laying last May,  they have not had a moult yet (think it will be when they are about 18 months old, if at all) So have had eggs all winter!! I get approx 40 eggs per month they don't always lay everyday.  Some weeks I use more eggs than others, if I have too many I sell them on the door step. If you average it out its about 240 per hen per year.   Good Luck xxxx :D

Not so for Aylesbury's though Dave sorry to contradict you but mine started last Sept/Oct and are still going strong :) with one each a day

It does all depend on the breed, the pure breds lay about 2 a week on average, the part breds lay more, warrens which are bred to lay average 350 a year i.e one a day.
