Tomatoes and Peppers in a greenhouse
« on: April 05, 2011, 15:26 »
My Father in law has told me we cant grow them together in the same greenhouse. Is this true or is he talking rubbish?

He claims the peppers attract white fly and the tomatoes are then destroyed by the fly.

I think he is talking rubbish as usual

Thanks folks

Grown indoors tomatoes are actually a good companion plant for peppers as, with their tendency to produce dense growth, they can help to increase humidity which the peppers need. :)

underplant with tagetes (french mariglods) they do a good job of repelling any white fly  :)

I grow both in a small lean-to greenhouse with no problems. :)

Definitely go for companion planting if using the same greenhouse/tunnel. Marigolds are excellent (as many people have said) but I also grow french beans in mine (before they can go outside) so also plant nasturtium and basil as companions. The greater the diversity the less pests I reckon!

mine are always close to each other, along with audergines, chillis, basil etc never have much trouble at all with whitefly on Toms and rare on peppers, marigolds and basil are a good aid in that.
Cucumbers and tomatoes are often kept in diff greenhouses as cues like conditions much drier than toms but again I have never found a problem.

was just thinking that Richard. Up until now we have always grown toms and cucumber together but last year the toms were a disaster (the blight did not help), and it was such a challenge keeping everything moist enough for the cumbers. This year we are growing toms in the greenhouse (all cleaned, shaded and ready to go) and the cucumbers in the poly. Gone for 'Alicante' this time as they have some blight resistance and should be more productive. Fingers crossed! They are in the greenhouse already 3 inches high and growing nicely....am hoping to get away without another hard frost - this is sunny Cornwall after all! The cucumbers are in the ground and have been organically slug proofed - am very excited!

I put my Cucumbers at the end of the greenhouse, so I can give them a slightly different climate (I put trays down, with a couple of inches of water in them, to provide more humidity, and I don't open the vent at the very end of the house).  I suppose I could put a plastic curtain-wall up to further increase humidity ...
