New to me in 2018
« on: December 09, 2017, 11:52 »
I'm afraid the inner seedaholic has triumphed again and I have been tempted to try a couple of new varieties next year.

New to me in 2018 :

Gigant kohl rabi - sow late for roots which can get to be a few kilos in weight and will keep in store.  I love kohl rabi, so the idea having a shed stash for winter is just fab  8)

A white beetroot which has been bred to have chard like leaves and so is duel purpose - I like this idea as well  :D

Rapa Senza Testa - a leaf green for catch cropping in a few weeks when a bit of plot comes available.  I love greens of all kinds, so this was a no brainer

What are you trying next year?

Tomatoes - Orange Paruche, King Humbert, and Heartbreaker, Kosma onions, Yellow Potato onions, Painted Lady Runner Beans, Rouge Grenobloise Batavian lettuce, Elephant garlic, Socrates cucumber, Salad Burnet and dwarf bean  Merveille De Piemonte.

I've still got a couple of seed swap parcels to come, so there will be more!

Both Greenjay  :)  They are turnip greens from central Europe, but not tunipy tasting - just a mild flavoured, fast growing leafy green.  I eat a lot of greens, so will plonk a few in wherever I have space for a few weeks  :)

New for me:
Peppers: Semorah, Antohi, Napia, Midas, Lipstick, Amanda, Redskin and Big Bomb.
Potato: Sarpo Kifli
Cauli: Chinese Sprouting
Onion: Peter Glazebrook Giant and Exhibition

For the first time in a long while I haven't bought any seeds for new tomato varieties although I may have a bash at growing a giant tom.....

I noticed a couple of mentions above of things I already grow: white beetroot (I've essentially stopped growing red beetroot since discovering golden, white and Chioggia varieties several years ago) and Orange Paruche toms (I find them to be very similar, but slightly larger, than Sungold), all of which I highly recommend.

I had such good intentions, but somehow...

Added to my list are now black soy beans (easy to grow and taste like pistachios - hmmmm, but you never know ) and a big old beefsteak tomato called Aunt Gertie's Gold, which has been recommended by a friend.  If it is good enough for Aunt Gertie, its good enough for me.

I'm putting the seed catalogues away now and taking the seed sites off my favourites bar and pretending they don't exist

As many beans as I can find room for...

Thanks to Sunny, the Cherokee Trail of Tears and the Greek Gigantes will have pride of place, especially the Cherokees, as they are fantastic taken young and treated like French beans, and just as nice when dried and used over the winter!

I have added a salad potato called Juliette to the party now, and tiger nuts, which I had forgotten about (They were a Christmas present) and have just spotted them next to the seed boxes  ::)

Aubergines (Jack F1) - we'll see if I can do any good without a poly tunnel this far north. Grandson's request (not that he lives close like but we'll see ) and his girl friend wants a long thin sweet pepper like one that grows in Romania that her parents pickle so we are trying Thor F1 as that's the nearest we can find. Hey ho.
