When did you sow them, how did you grow them? Which variety were they? Did you fed them/the soil?

With some more info we might be able to see what went wrong, or we could just blame the weather  :D

I favour starting them off in March in a cool greenhouse in deep seed trays. (I use cat litter ones). They can easily be watered and fed to bring them on to a decent size before transplanting out into a deep, dibbed hole.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I do the same as D.D. and most of my leeks are 3cm+ in diameter. They were transplanted after the early potatoes came out and they get a regular dose of liquid feed. I do think feeding is important, especially if they are following a previous crop.

I have a totally different problem. Like others I started Musselburgh off in trays in early spring, planted out in late spring/early summer, kept them well-fed and moist, stood back in awe as they grew like the clappers to about 3 or 4cm diameter - and then promptly bolted and set seed. Other than as flavouring, they are unusable

That's a shame, Alan. If you cut out the flowering stalk from the centre, there might be enough of the barrel still useable perhaps?

A lot went to seed early here as well Alan, I tend to hold back a bit and generally have excellent crops that tend not bolt, however this year I have not had one blot but have been slowing growing and not as thick as previous years.
