I watched a you tube clip recently (which I now can't find).which showed slices of tomato being laid on to a pot of compost,then being covered with compost.
A number of time lapsed photos then showed the seed growth.
For a bit of fun I am trying this,but on a more serious note has any one tried and had any success.

Well the ones that fall off the plants, grow without even being sliced :lol:

Seems a logical way to get new plants, Digger!
You can't get more natural than that, and judging by the hundreds of small seedlings I get all over the place, (from chucking over-ripe toms back on the soil), they'll be hardy enough to get going pretty well!
I always keep some seed back, even from F1s, as there can be some surprising results, as I found out last year, with just two plants from Crimson Crush tomato seeds going absolutely mad, with huge fruits, and very vigorous roots!

Of course the tomato that aim using is shop purchased.

I saw that video and at Christmas i dropped a shop bought tom on the floor, so scooped it up and put the bits into some MPC. Got about 8 seedlings now growing on the windowsill.
Only time will tell if they will turn into plants.
No idea what variety they are.

I tried this last year, having noticed how many stray tomato plants were growing in the greenhouse border from tomatoes that had dropped off the plants. At the end of the season I just filled a pot with compost, then laid a couple of the rotting tomatoes on top, sprinkled compost on top, then left the whole thing in the unheated greenhouse over winter. When I started sowing the following year, I put the pot into a heated propagator, and shortly afterwards there was an absolute forest of seedlings. Potted one or two to grow on, and they cropped beautifully.
I suppose if you desperately need them to grow true, you might be disappointed, but the ones I grew were absolutely fine. (Sungold, and Gardener's Delight).

While working in Oman we used to go to the base sewerage farm for tomato plants, they were growing like weeds.
The resultant fruits tasted very nice! Cheers, Tony.

Chickens eat tomatoes = tomatoes grow everywhere!
p.s. although how I had a tomato plant growing in a hanging basket I don't know...

Chickens eat seed - seed passes straight through - so get 'sown' everywhere the chickens go, complete with their own dose of manure :lol:

Ha ha he he,Yes,I have seedlings.so much pleasure from so little. No I haven't been on the red wine yet .
