What no beetroot!!
« on: June 24, 2016, 21:12 »
As the title says, my beetroot is awful this year, awful germination, numerous attempts but no joy at all, Mrs not happy
Any luck elsewhere?

I have problems with direct sown beetroot so I have taken to starting them off in modules and then transplanting to final growing position.

Agree with Goneterseed, direct sowing never gets me anywhere, but modules planted out later are perfect.

Think I will try the same as no germination from mine either. Got some new seeds delivered yesterday so will sow them at home today.

I started mine off in a seed tray in a cold frame before planting out the tiny seedlings into a very sandy bed. They're looking fine to my inexperienced eye.
My husband said the bed was too sandy - it is a former sandpit - but I did add soil and fertilizer before I planted the seedlings, so we shall see what occurs.

Same here. I did a small germination test on my seed. 4 germinated out of 7.

Strange....Beetroot and Parsnip are the only seed i sow directly and never have a problem with either?
For the beetroot though, i do soak them in warm water overnight and then cover with old fluourescent light fitting diffusers with plenty of slug pellets until they are about an inch high. After this i remove the covers and forget about them. Im fast becoming of the opinion that things grow despite my efforts though rather than because of them :nowink:

Check for slugs...
I have nasty ones who grab the beetroot the moment it germinates, so always have to pop slug death around them

Whenever I don't it appears to be zero germination...
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I have cheated bought some seedlings from a garden centre. They have done well as I have carefully harvested one from each clump and let the other seedlings grow on. Also grown some in modules at home and transplanted them.
Overall harvests good as we have had loads of rain!!

Cheers HH
