black lumpy bits in potatos!
« on: February 03, 2010, 20:51 »
I've had to buy potatos in, having come to end of my store :( and I got a sack of Maris Pipers from my local farm shop. They have alot of grey lumpy, sort of furry, growths just below the skin. Reminds me of the lumps I used to see in the school mash when I was young :tongue2:  My question is .... what are they  and what causes them? Don't want mine looking like that and they are a bit of a pain to remove, esp when baked in skins! Thanks

Could be frost damage...hardly surprising with the weather we've had. Potatoes must be stored in a frost-free environment otherwise they suffer. Keeping them in a shed or garage when the outside temperature gets down to -15 is no help.
